Wakefield back for 2010 and beyond
November 9th, 2009 by czar

So with this signing, you are basically giving the 5th slot Wakefield for the next two years, right?

You are not giving away anything– the Sox are giving him $1.5 mil guaranteed in 2011; that’s a drop in the bucket. I have no worries that he’s blocking a potential starter at that salary as long as the FO continues to value players performance appropriately. I’ll agree that it seems as if they are handing him the #5 spot again next year; but if he comes out of the gate hurt or with a 7.54 ERA his contract is not going to preclude the Sox from moving on if they see fit.

Look at it this way; we all assumed that he was getting his $4m option picked up; we’re essentially taking a $1m (somewhat more with early 2009 incentives) gamble. Considering that people bemoan the fact that the Sox didn’t just pony up another $30 million for Teixeira, this seems like change at the bottom of JH’s wallet.
