No, you cannot give Julio Lugo to the A’s

I could see us matching up with Oakland on a Lugo trade. They are completely out of options at SS. I could see a Jason Kendall style deal where the A’s don’t even require us to eat that much of JL’s contract.

What on Earth is a Jason Kendall style deal?

In 2004 when Jason Kendall was traded to the A’s, from the Pirates, he had roughly $30 million left on his deal and was coming off back-to-back seasons with OPS+’s over 107. He was moved for Mark Redman was owed $5 million for the next season and Arthur Rhodes was owed $4 million and cash to offset some of the remaining $20ish or so million.

The A’s ended up taking on less than $10 million per year which was tied up in an all-star catcher who had performed at above average levels over 580 AB’s in each of the previous two seasons.

Lugo’s contract would force the A’s to eat more for an inferior player, who has been absolute garbage the last two and a half seasons (OPS+ of 41, 65, 78 with the 2006 LAD, 2007 and 2008 Sox respectively), and is a player known for speed who is coming off a quad injury that cost him the latter half of last season.

Convincing the A’s to take on a $10mm per hit on Julio Lugo when he has produced about replacement level over the last 30 months is far different from selling them on an all-star catcher which allowed for them to dump salary.
