Lugo/Lowrie ’09?
October 23rd, 2008 by czar

I can’t see any scenario where the Sox consider playing Lugo at SS.

Lugo and Lowrie had almost the same number of PA (307 to 308). They were almost equal in BRAR; so offensively, there wasn’t much of a difference when you average out their whole seasons. Lowrie was better by about 10 runs in the field; which ends up being equal to 1-1.5 wins.

Lowrie was the better player this year; but some form of platoon wouldn’t shock me. Unfortunately, Lowrie’s good from the right side of the plate, meaning there’s no intuitive way to split time. As long as no one puts up a fit; it wouldn’t shock me if the Sox rode the hot hand at SS throughout the season in 2009; kind of like the Coco/Ellsbury thing. The advantage to that is you have either Lugo/Lowrie on the bench; which represents an instant upgrade over Alex Cora, regardless of who the starter for a given game is.
