On Jason Bay and the defensive “upgrade” in LF…
July 31st, 2008 by czar

One thing that stands out about Jason Bay– a lot of people are taking into account the upgrade in defense from Manny to Bay– his defensive numbers have steadily (and sharply) declined over the last three years.

In 2006, he had a Rate of 107 (He was +7 runs above average defensively over 100 games). In 2007, he was 91 (-9 runs/100 games). This year he’s at 81 (-19 runs/100 games).

What is rate?  What’s his UZR, RF, and ZR look like?

Rate is a normalized FRAA.

FRAA:
11 (159 games)
-12 (145)
-19 (106)

Don’t have my hands on UZR. Both his Range Factor and Zone Rating have dropped each of the last 3 years (including 2008) as well…

  • Traversing the land that is known as Red Sox Nation, The Czar Who Wears Red Sox is an attempt at compiling a repertoire of my ever-so-sexy forum posts (when I'm too lazy to write my own damn entry) and other random baseball thoughts that strike. For those whose posts serve as the inspiration of my epiphanies and rants, do not be angry, but merely, be honored that you have achieved such status. Names will never be revealed.
